Valve cancels first Dota 2 Major of the year

As the regional DPC Winter Circuits are coming to a close, everything won’t culminate in an international LAN Major. Instead Valve has decided that Tour 1 will conclude as the regional tournaments reach their end. Point distribution for the first Major will be redistributed to the Second and Third Major instead, says Valve. “This way, the balance of points between regional and cross-region play remains the same.”

COVID-19 Threat

The reason behind the cancellation of the Major is the threat that COVID-19 still poses, says Valve, which made organizing an international tournament unfeasible. “While hopes were high that we could host an international LAN event, the discovery and spread of new strains of COVID-19 and the resulting increase of travel restrictions has made it unfeasible for all qualified teams to gather for a LAN tournament.”

Valve certainly isn’t the only one shying away from organizing local events, especially as new COVID-19 strings have been popping up. Earlier this month Riot Games also announced that the LEC will not host a studio audience and play will resume online instead of in the studio.

Points for the Majors will be updated in this way:

Major 2:

1st Place – 520 Points
2nd Place – 310 Points
3rd Place – 210 Points
4th Place – 105 Points
5th Place – 52 Points

Major 3:

1st Place – 680 Points
2nd Place – 410 Points
3rd Place – 270 Points
4th Place – 135 Points
5th Place – 68 Points
