Rumor: Is Overwatch 2 being pushed back into 2023?

Overwatch 2 was announced at Blizzcon 2019 and created some high expectations for fans. Hero reworks, a new campaign mode, and much more were all expected to be released in the relatively near future. Little information has since been released about the game or its development, and the news that has been leaked certainly does not bode well. Prominent Overwatch players and leakers have revealed that the game is likely to be rescheduled for release in 2023.

Allegedly, the reasoning behind this has to do with unsatisfactory developer progress. Twitch streamer and Overwatch leaker, Metro, stated that heroes, the campaign, and maps were mostly all completed. The current heroes in the game however are taking significantly longer to balance, and attempting to create a fair environment in new maps for both old and new heroes is supposedly posing a major problem for developers.

The sheer amount of reworking to existing heroes has been cited as the biggest hindrance and holdup to the Overwatch 2 project yet. Developers were said to have been unprepared for this event and consequently may need more time, perhaps an entire year, to put Overwatch 2 in an enjoyable, playable state.

Blizzard certainly has suffered in the past month, and a long delay would only be the latest in a long line of disappointments coming from the company. As Overwatch switches to a 5v5 format, sponsors pull out of both OWL and CDL, and players continuously switch to other franchises, Blizzard must wonder if there will be much of an audience left.
