Riot announces 2021 World Championship dates and venue

2021 Worlds will see a return to China as finals will be held in Shenzhen, China.

On the eve of the MSI 2021 finals between Damwon Kia and RNG, Riot Games announced the location and dates of the proceeding World Championships. In their announcement, Riot Games confirmed that Worlds and the finals would be hosted at the Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen, China. Starting in the usual timing of October, the World finals which will conclude the event with a new world champion will take place on November 6th. Shenzhen in general is a hub of technology and culture and the country’s 5th largest city.

Usually home to Shenzhen F.C., the stadium capable of seating 60,000 people will instead see international LoL competition. In their official announcement, Riot Games’ head of esports, John Needham, cited the high tech start ups and innovative nature of the city made it “the prefect landscape to host our finals.”

Though it is unknown if this Worlds will also host a live audience, the LPL have seemingly successfully integrated audiences back into their regular season play. Last years Worlds, hosted in Shanghai, also brought live audiences back to the finals between Suning Gaming and Damwon. This will be the first time in League of Legend’s history that a Worlds will take place in the same country in consecutive years.
