Criteria

If you want to buy a gaming desk there are multiple criteria you have to consider. Luckily we have them listed up for you:

  • Gaming optimized surface coating

Aside from the keyboard the mouse is the most used input device. Because of that you want a surface which allows your Gaming Mouse to smoothly glide over it but also offers enough texture to precisely capture the input without any errors. For that reason some tables come with a huge mousepad which can be called a deskmat. But if you prefer your own seperate mousepad you can pretty much ignore the surface of the desk.

  • Height adjustment

Ergonomics is a very important part not only with office desks but also while gaming. If you spend a lot of time in front of your PC you want a desk which is adjusted towards your body to prevent bad posture and tension.

The same applies to gaming desks which makes the height adjustment a must-have. A standard desk is usally around 72 centimeters tall, which is based on the average height of 1,73 meters. If your height is different you certainly need the option since the desk will not fit you.

Generally speaking you should be able to adjust the height by at least 10 centimeters to reach the optimal height. The good thing is that you do not have to test the table in the store since a lot of the new gaming desks offer flexible height adjustment. Gaming desks that can be adjusted so far in height that you can even play while standing are particularly ergonomic. Alternating between sitting and standing effectively relieves your spine.

  • Additional Features

To help you with your cable management many gaming desks offer cable trays to control your cable clutter. Depending on the product, these can be cable channels, round recesses in the table top or a combination of both. Practical extras can also include holders where you can store your headset and drinks. The same applies to height-adjustable feet that allow you to align the gaming desk horizontally, even if the floor is not completely flat.

  • Ideal width and length

The optimal size of the Gaming Desk depends entirely on your individual needs. If you need additional space besides the monitor, keyboard and mouse, a length of 160 centimeters and a depth of 80 centimeters is a good choice. Many gaming desks rely on these dimensions, so they are already something like the standard.

Even smaller desks can be a fit for you. But if you opt for a desk with a depth of 60 centimeters you have to consider that the stand of many monitors will take half of the available space leaving less space for your mouse and keyboard.

The length of the gaming desk also depends on the design. The most common variant is the classic desk format with a rectangular tabletop. As with standard desks, however, gaming desks are of course also available in a L-format, which fits well in the corner of the room. For cramped spaces, angled desks are also available, which can perfectly fill the corner of a room better due to their triangular design.

  • Materials

A gaming desk has to withstand a lot like any other desk. Therefore, make sure that the gaming desk is manufactured as high quality as possible so that nothing will wobble back and forth during operation. In addition, the desk should be designed for a load of at least 80 kilograms, so that you can use it for a long time.

Solid wood gaming desks look nice, are very durable and can carry a lot of load. However, they also comes with disadvantages such as a high weight and a way higher price compared to the widely used gaming desks made of MDF. Solid wood table tops also require you to use a mouse pad or deskmat for optimal input.

Therefore most gaming desks are made of some sort of pressboard or MDF. These will usally rest on steel or aluminum legs, which are often shaped like the letters Z or K when viewed from the side. Compared to solid wood desks, MDF desks are cheaper and lighter. and are often covered with a special coating. This not only looks unique, but also makes the gaming desks very resistant to scratches. Many desks offer a coating imitating a carbon look, which looks very premium. However, the desk underneath is still made of pressboard or MDF since the Gaming Desk would not be affordable if its entire tabletop was made of carbon.

Gaming Desks with a glass surface look very unique, but they are very sensitive compared to wooden and MDF desks. Glass can be damaged very quickly if you tend to rage while gaming. If you play with shorter sleeves which expose your forearms, the glass surface can also slow down your arm movements and feel unpleasantly cold.
