First signs of a LoL-Movie? Riot plans its own Cinematic Universe

The world of Runeterra is vast. With over 150 Champions, League of Legends fans have been begging for a movie and Riot listened. First signs indicate that Riot Games is working on a TV and movie franchise, similarly to the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. Job listings for their main studio in Los Angeles have been listed by Riot Games themselves.

Riot Games is looking for a Global Head of Live Action Film and Global Head of Live Action TV in their job listings. Something to note is that the TV position does not only cover their upcoming animated series ”Arcane”. The listing itself indicates the construction of a cinematic universe for television and movie screens, across the world of Runeterra.

Enough movie content in the LoL universe

With more than 150 Champions and many other side characters, all with their own backstories and personalities, there is more than enough content to produce stories for the big screen. They can even interpret one of their many short stories from the League of Legends Universe page into a movies or TV show.

The upcoming turn-based role-playing game “Ruined King: A League of Legends Story” and their confirmed League MMORPG will provide additional content to flesh out the universe.

The animated shorts, from their official YouTube channel, show first glimpses into how a LoL movie could look like.

While it is not known what entry will start the LoLCU, the animated series “Arcane” is only a few months off. The story is about the past of popular Champions Jinx and Vi and how they managed to survive the slums of Piltover and Zaun. Additional characters, such as Caitlyn and Warwick, have already been confirmed to make an appearance. A release date has not been confirmed yet, although it is still stated to come out in 2021.
