Group A saw one of the most memorable game days in Worlds history. While Cloud9 made the miracle run happen and will represent the LCS in knockouts, 100 Thieves could not replicate their results. After EDG dropped both games against 100T and T1, the LPL first seed fell to second place.
T1 soars – A return to glory for Faker?
T1, formerly SKT, are the most storied organization in League of Legends history. With three World Championships, led by Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, T1 entered Worlds 2021 as the team’s first international event since 2019. Though the LCK team was likely to escape groups, few predicted T1 to escape groups as the first seed with a 5-1 record.
One of the two rookies on the roster, Kim “Canna” Chang-dong has emerged as one of the premier toplaners at Worlds. With their sololaners seemingly performing at their peak, T1 seem poised for a deep run at Worlds. Given their strength, it does not seem to far fetched to see 2021 as the year that T1 claims their fourth World title.
100 Thieves end on a high note
Though 100 Thieves failed to escape groups, the LCS Champions ended with a respectable 3-3 finish. Most importantly, 100T came to rescue of T1 and LCK fans everywhere. Their unexpected win against EDG sealed the LPL squad fate in at second place while T1 will get to dodge Damwon Kia in the quarter finals.
Kim “Ssumday” Chan-ho had an impeccable last performance on Kennen, finding impressive flank angles in game-deciding team fights. All of the 100 Thieves performers hit their stride in this final game. They beg the question, if 100 Thieves played this well the entire tournament, could they have made quarters?
