What are IVs in Pokémon GO?

What are IVs?

Well, if you’ve been playing the mainstream Pokémon games, you might have an idea already. All Pokémon are different and IVs (Individual Value) are hidden stats to make that happen. The higher the IV of your Pokémon in a certain stat, the stronger it’ll be. The same thing happens in Pokémon GO, with these stats ranging from 0 to 15, the former being weak, the latter being perfect. That’s why many trainers strive to get Pokémon with three 15 IV stats. These stats are eventually combined to form your Pokémon’s CP or Combat Points.

Can you check what IVs your Pokémon has?

Yes! Checking the IV stats of your Pokémon has actually been made relatively simple in Pokémon GO. When navigating to the summary of your Pokémon, you can ask the professor to ‘appraise’ your Pokémon, which will result in a star rating. That way you can spot just how strong your Pokémon is and what its IVs are.

Why do people look for ‘perfect’ Pokémon?

If you’re just playing the game casually, any Pokémon will do. If you’re going up against the best of the best in Pokémon battles or doing the highest level of raids, you’ll need the strongest Pokémon to level the playing field. That’s why people look for Pokémon that have an IV total of 45, the maximum. This can be a very tedious grind, but there are some things that can help. Shadow Pokémon have a higher chance to be stronger, Pokémon have higher IV’s if caught during the appropriate weather boosts and eggs and Raid Bosses also have a higher likelihood to have better IVs.
