The top 5 most beautiful Worlds skins in League of Legends

With 2021 Worlds quickly approaching, who will lift the Summoner’s Cup and earn their very own skins is up in the air.

With MSI in the rear-view mirror, Worlds 2021 is rapidly approaching. As per tradition, the winning team gets to select five respective champions for Riot Games to make unique skins of, commemorating their World Championship run. Throughout the years we have seen some of the best (and worst) championship skins – but here are our picks on the most beautiful designs.

5. Funplus Phoenix (2019)

True to the name of the team, Funplus Phoenix’s skin set brought their Phoenix mascot and theme to the rift. This set included Thresh, Vayne, Malphite, Lee Sin, and Gangplank. Every champion followed the similar color palette of hot reds and glowing cinders seemingly breezing off of them.

The long-time LPL midlaner, Kim “Doinb” Tae-Sang capped off his first and only (thus far) run at Worlds with an unorthodox Malphite skin. Many anticipated for him to select his notorious Nautilus Mid pick, however ultimately chose Malphite for his wife who has supported him throughout his esports career.

Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang immortalized his incredible performances on Lee Sin with his Worlds skin. Named the finals MVP, Lee Sin has since become synonymous with Tian’s aggressive playstyle and jungling. Tian’s Lee Sin was even referenced in the following year’s Worlds song, Take Over.

4. Samsung Galaxy (2017)

Samsung Galaxy bookended the five-year long stretch of Korean dominance over the international LoL competition by defeating their domestic opponents, SKT. Gnar, Ezreal, Jarvan IV, Tayliah, Xayah, and Rakan. The 2017 World Champion’s skins all followed the team’s spectrum of blues found in their logo. Unfortunately for the organization, they underwent several rebrands in the following year, moving from Samsung Galaxy to KSV and eventually landing on Gen.G.

Most notably, Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk and Jo “CoreJJ: Yong-in both selected the ADC and support duo in the first year of their release. Both players have since shown they have not lost form on their respective champions, often dawning their Worlds skins in reference. Despite Ruler’s famously horrendous signature, the SSG skins were a beautifully designed addition to the game.

3. Damwon (2020)

The reigning World Champions, Damwon Gaming (now Damwon Kia), took inspiration from Greek mythology when selecting their skins. Twisted Fate, Leona, Jhin, Kennen, and Nidalee were the team’s picks. Every skin from the lineup can be equated to one of the member of the Greek pantheon. Twisted Fate is meant to resemble Hermes, Leona to Athena, and Jhin as Apollo.

Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon selected his most well-known comfort pick, Kennen, as his Worlds skin. The electric little raccoon was made to resemble a mini-version of Zeus, though adorned with Damwon’s colors. This interesting theme that followed every champion in the skin set has made it one of the more memorable Worlds skin lineups in recent memory.

Even as Nuguri has moved on to the LPL and Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun has been slowly phased out of the roster, these skins stand as a testament to Damwon’s dominance in 2020.

2. Invictus Gaming (2018)

Invictus Gaming led off the two year period of LPL dominance at Worlds by defeating Fnatic to become the 2019 World Champions. IG’s Worlds skins include Camille, Rakan, LeBlanc, Fiora, Kai’sa, and Kayle. IG took a more minimalistic approach to their version of a Worlds skin set, opting for a monochromatic look. While only really using two colors, the hints of blue and featherly textures of the skins keep them anything but boring. The prestigious and confident look truly embodies just how strong IG were during their famous 2019 Worlds run.

Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok most notably selected the mechanically demanding champion, Fiora, for his personal skin. TheShy stated that this was an intention choice as he only wanted players good at the game to lock-in his champion skin.

1. SKT (2016)

The longest dynasty in League of Legends history capped off their era of dominance with the most memorable set in history. SKT selected Syndra, Jhin, Ekko, Zac, Nami, and Olaf to represent their 2016 World title run. The splash artwork in itself is a phenomenal work that showcases the prestige of the organization. All champions listed were infused with the iconic red and white of SKT, but found interesting ways to utilize color across the skins.

The most historically successful player in LoL, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok was finally able to earn a skin for one of his most revered champions, Syndra. Alongside him, Jhin, Ekko, and Zac also all received universally adorned skins for their respective champions.

Though this may have been the last year SKT lifted the Summoner’s Cup, they ended with a bang.
