Team Liquid to replace FunPlus Phoenix at VCT Masters Reykjavik

Due to the war in Ukraine and the invasion by Russia, many travel restrictions are in place, on top of the COVID-19 regulations. This resulted in FunPlus Phoenix being unable to play at VCT Masters Reykjavik. The team features one player from Ukraine (ANGE1) and two Russian players (Shao and SUYGETSU). Team Liquid, who finished in fourth place, will be taking their spot at the Masters.

VCT EMEA posted a statement on the matter, explaining the situation. “Options included extending the roster lock window, relaxing emergency substitute rules and liaising the relevant government officials to secure visas and travel permissions. Unfortunately and through no fault of their own, FunPlus Phoenix will not be able to field a complete roster. While we want to be as accommodating as possible, there is a need to ensure a minimum level of roster continuity out of fairness to all participants in the competition.”

Riot Games says FunPlus Phoenix will still be awarded with VCT points and get a cut of the prize pool, to keep them competitive. The event will play out from April 10 to April 24. With FunPlus Phoenix now unable to compete, the EMEA representatives are G2 Esports, Fnatic and Team Liquid.
