Rumor: Worlds 2021 will be held in Iceland

Just days ago, Riot Games made the sudden announcement that Worlds would be changing locations. Formerly set to be held in China across five different cities, Worlds 2021 will now be played in Europe. This massive change came from visa issues on both the player side and for production crews. Where specifically in Europe the biggest esport event of the year would be held was a mystery, until rumors recently surfaced again.

Travel restrictions have made planning esports events incredibly difficult for the past year. Countless tournaments have been postponed or outright cancelled, however Riot Games have successfully put on two major LAN events in recent months. Both MSI and Masters Reykjavik were hosted in Iceland. Both events hosted players though lacked press attendance and live audiences.

Sources from Dot Esports recently alleged that Iceland will be the destination for teams attending Worlds 2021. This information has not yet been confirmed Riot Games, and it is not been release whether or not this will be the only city in rotation. Iceland has been one of the more open countries in the pandemic, but it is unknown whether or not live audiences will be allowed this time around.

Riot clearly knows how to run an event in the pandemic. Worlds 2020 saw zero new infections, and the successful use of ‘bubble’ quarantines also prevented further spreading at both events in Iceland. It could potentially be Riot Games’ best option for replanning an entire event with relatively little time.
