Riot Games announced that they intend on removing the all-chat function from League of Legends. This is the latest in Riot’s ongoing efforts to stifle the rampant toxicity in the LoL community. Players will have until the release of patch 11.21 to enjoy the social feature, as its impending demise is coming.
The ability to communicate between teams has been a long-standing and fan favorite function in Riot’s MOBA. In their official announcement, Riot Brightmoon states “While /all chat can be the source of fun social interaction between teams, as well as some good-hearted banter, right now negative interactions outweigh the positives.”
Brightmoon cites claims over rising negativity and harassment in soloqueue as the reason for /all chat’s removal. Players will still be able to communicate to their opponents in some way. Emotes and champion mastery will still cross team boundaries. End of game chat will also be shared, so GGs can be seen by teammates and opponents alike still.
Riot acknowledges that all chat is not the only source of toxicity in League of Legends, as many reports filed come from within the team. Still, Riot Games believes that this is an effective way to mitigate the growing issues between players in game, and state that the unfortunate loss of /all chat gives a net game to the game.
Though unfortunately all chat is on the way out, we will still have the feature until Patch 11.21. Public reception has largely been negative thus far, many already feeling the loss of all chat.
