Machi.Bruce: “If we make it past Suning, we can make it to Playoffs.”

We sat down with Machi Esports’ AD Carry Bruce after their upset win against Team Liquid at Worlds 2020. The Taiwanese PCS player talked to us about their chances for Playoffs, his region and the current meta.

Day 2 of the Worlds 2020 group stage began with an upset as Machi Esports took down Team Liquid to begin the day. AD Carry Chiu “Bruce” Chih-Chun was a major reason for their success. We caught up with him after their win.

esports.com: Congratulations on the upset victory against Team Liquid. Especially after PSG’s performance yesterday, many fans were worried that the PCS would get rolled over. What was the main reason for today’s win?

Bruce: During Play-Ins we scrimmed with Team Liquid and those went well, so we had quite a confident approach to today’s match.

Did you think TL underestimated you before the match?

I don’t really think so. They performed according to what I expected of their level.

After you won against TL your next opponents are Suning and G2. Which team is the more dangerous one?

G2 is probably going to be harder. We do face LPL teams occassionally, so we have a better understanding of their play.

How high are the chances for Machi to make it to Playoffs?

The main hurdle is going to be Suning. If we make it past them, we can do it.

You already mentioned that you have interacted with LPL beforehand. So how are your preparations against Suning coming along?

The heart of their playstyle is SofM. So within the coaching staff and amongst us players we have specifically studied his games and devised methods to deal with him.

This is your first time at Worlds. Were you nervous before your match?

I was a little nervous before the match, but since the tournament is without an audience due to the pandemic I did not feel that much pressure.

In the current meta Ashe and Jhin are strong picks. You play them both very well too. What makes them so good at the moment?

Because currently the meta revolves more around Top and Jungle. Ashe and Jhin both have a bit more utility which supplements that playstle around those two a lot.

How does the PCS region compare to others. what are the specific strengths and weaknesses of the PCS?

In the PCS we kind of combine the LPL and the LCK approaches. We can teamfight but also macro. Our signature champions are also a bit stronger than other regions might expect.

PCS took home their first victory today. In the eyes of many fans the PCS region is a weaker league. Do you think you can change that perception at this year’s Worlds?

Before coming to Shanghai we all set our aim and motivation to change exactly that perception of us. I also want to thank our fans, who have supported us along the way.

Thank you for the interview and best of luck for the upcoming matches!

Thank you.
