LoL – How MMR works and where to see your hidden MMR

Many myths surround the elusive Matchmaking Rating (MMR) in League of Legends. Everyone is trying to gain some, but what is it, how do you gain it and where can you see it?

What is MMR?

Matchmaking Rating influences how you are matched with players in ranked matches. A lower MMR leads to worse opponents and allies even if your own rank is showing a different icon.
For example a player might have gained Gold in the past, but might get matched with Silver or Platin players depending on his current performance.

How does MMR influence my progress in ranked?

If a player has a lower MMR, it influences the amount of League Points (LP) that he gets for each game. One of the most common experiences players have is gaining proportionally more or less LP for each victory or loss.

How does my MMR change?

MMR fluctuates as players lose and win their matches. In order to climb or drop in MMR significantly players need to push their winrate away from 50% (regardless if it is losing or winning more often).

Where can I see my MMR?

There is no official way to see your MMR in LoL. For now you can only guess a certain range by keeping an eye on the LP distribution after ranked games.

Some websites offer a service that gives out a general idea for players. One of them is whatismymmr.com which applies the public algorithms with the data from the API to give a prognosis. While it is a decent tool, only Riot has access to 100% accurate data regarding MMR.
