First Look at Super Nintendo World

Fans have been eagerly awaiting a look inside Super Nintendo World. Universal Studios Japan have now allowed several journalists a small sneak peek into the theme park.

After it was initially announced way back in 2015, Super Nintendo World is now finally ready and schedueld to open in 2021 on February 4.

Universal Studios Japan gave the attending press a tour of the Mario Kart attraction that had been in development for six years. While visitors will not be able to drive freely on a race circuit the ride will still conserve a feeling of “Real-life Mario Kart” by giving everyone AR googles and steering wheels.

According to Bloomberg’s Kurumi Mori the attraction begins in Bowser’s castle and races through different areas. These will be familiar to common Mario Kart settings such as a lava level or fan-favorite Rainbow Road. During the ride the visitors will be able to gather items and throw out shells just like in the game.

While the early tour did not include other areas of the Super Nintendo World, other attractions such as a Donkey Kong-themed area are also planned and under construction.

Initially Super Nintendo World was scheduled to open alongside the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 but COVID-19 put an end to those plans. With the pandemic still not contained, the theme park will have a tough challenge of operating within the health and safety regulations.
