CS:GO – How to reposition like a pro

Ever had the problem of you getting caught in the same position too many times, or maybe you just don’t know how to get into a better spot for yourself after getting spotted? Everyone has their usual sites that they play on, on every map. How to make the most out of that without getting predictable is not easy, because you can only come up with so many positions. However, you can also try to mix in multiple positions during the same round by repositioning on contact or in general throughout the round.

Taking a step back on defence

Most sites offer at least two entry points you have to mind whilst playing on the CT-side. To make sure your team is always aware of your opponents movement, you might want to go for a cheeky peek early on in the round. Vital is though, that you don’t overcommit on the frags because you are highly likely to be outnumbered. If you do spot a player or multiple, make sure to already know what next position you will be moving to towards the site.

My personal advice is that you move to a position that covers you from the entry point you just peeked before, so you can focus on the other entryway whilst your teammate, hopefully, covers the players you just saw. This way you can get a good crossfire going, again trying to peek on contact of your teammate because your opponents will be focussing on him, rather than you. These reposition positions can be your usual angles you might already be holding, so make sure to think which spots you can go back to safely after contact.

Playing the map and mapping the plays

It’s not just your usual entry points you have to take into account. All of these repositioning plays do require good communication with your team. If the communication is good and there is for instance a hunch that players are moving towards a different site than you are holding, but the bomb has not been spotted. Make sure you know where to reposition to enable safe and fast rotations, but also sometimes try to have a chance to play the map whilst waiting for the inevitable call that you are indeed on the wrong site.

Check your minimap every now and then to see where gaps are falling in the defence. Can you cover them off from your site? Awesome! Can’t you? Try to fill the gaps by repositioning to ensure the opponents are not getting too much map control for free. Map the plays they make and play the map accordingly.
