The inaugural VCT Champions will see an all EMEA finals as Acend are bound to battle against Gambit in the Grand Finals. Both teams managed to defeat their respective semi-final opponents to advance to this final stage. Acend particularly had an incredible game as they upset tournament favorites Team Liquid. This is how the semi-final matches unfolded, and what we can expect moving into finals.
Acend shock Team Liquid, qualify for finals
As one of the lower seeds coming in from the EMEA region, few expected Acend to usurp the top team coming into the game. Team Liquid had thus far cruised through groups and the playoffs undefeated, only dropping two maps in total. In the semi-final match-up, it seems nothing went right for TL as Acend won in a convincing, clean sweep.
Acend kept Liquid below six wins on both maps. The Polish duo of Starxo and Zeek led the charge for Acend, both dominating on Bind (13-6) and Split (13-5). Starxo ended the series with an impressive 40 kills, 179.1 ADR, and a 278 ACS. Entering into the finals, Acend are unlikely contenders for the crown.
KRÜ nearly upset Gambit
The LATAM team KRÜ have been the Cinderella story of VCT Champions, upsetting Sentinels and Fnatic to advance to their most difficult opponent, Gambit. The CIS superstars were certainly challenged by KRÜ, as the LATAM team went toe-to-toe with them across all three maps.
In the final game, Gambit narrowly escaped in an OT thriller. Only the verge of elimination, the heavy favorites in Gambit will now hope to repeat their championship performance from the previous Masters tournament.
