Flying Penguins dominate Evil Geniuses

The group stage for the North American Dota 2 qualifiers of DreamLeague Season 11 is all done.

One of the most surprising turns of events there was Evil Geniuses losing to the newly-formed stack of Jacky “EternalEnvy” Mao. The team which placed third at this year’s International and the recent Chongqing Major got simply outmatched and outplayed.

Game 1 was the most contested one but also the shortest, ending 26 minutes in. With Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan’s Leshrac taking control of the game and only a single Black King Bar on the enemy Kunkka, fights were a walk in the park for EG.

The next two matches, though, were something entirely different. Both cores on each team played the same heroes, Phantom Assassin for Envy and Arc Warden for Artour “Arteezy” Babaev. The former came online much earlier and murdered most of the enemy team with ease. Despite the game going over the 50-minute mark, which is usually a good thing for Arc Warden, the rest of his team were really far behind and Arteezy couldn’t bear the burden alone.

Game 3 gave us more of the same and some unexpected but hilarious memes. Mao played PA for the third time in a row and again did quite well for himself by taking the early advantage. Every support was in danger of getting annihilated in less than a second by a random dagger. Nico “Gunnar” Lopez’ Ember Spirit was also on fire in the final match, making things even harder for EG. The only hope for them laid again with Babaev’s Troll Warlord and he was in no condition to do it alone. We’ve already seen Arteezy getting Sprouted, Cliffed, but this time his bane proved to be Ice Shards.

Despite losing 1-2 against Flying Penguins, Evil Geniuses still managed to secure a top finisher in the group. The playoffs continue later today with the lower bracket, while the upper bracket saga will resume tomorrow. EG’s next opponent will be Forward Gaming while Penguins go against J.Storm. As a result of the three slots allocated to the NA region, there won't be an upper bracket final, instead, two of the four teams will directly qualify.
