Esports an official module at the University of York

The University of York will collaborate with ESL to advance eSports in institutions of higher learning. The Department of Theatre, Film, and Television will launch a module that will seek to explain how eSports have transitioned from a marginal and grassroots movement into a full-blown industry drawing interest and investment worth billions.

The course is slated to start in the second half of 2018 and it will be available to all students who are currently part of the BSc in Interactive Media and BSc in Film and TV Production.

More specifically, the course will cast eSports against a background of a traditional sports broadcast, interactive technology and other elements exclusive to the virtual game world that has helped the segment develop into the phenomenon it is today.

University of York Department of Theatre, Film, and Television researcher Florian Block had this to say regarding the new initiative:

‘These are very exciting times for us and our students. Esports are growing rapidly, and highly skilled jobs will need to be filled with graduates who not only know specialised production techniques but understand the sports ecosystem inside and out. We are thrilled to be working closely with ESL on this module. We believe that by combining the academic rigour of a Russell Group university with the experience of industry pioneers, we are in a unique position to prepare our students for a wide range of attractive career paths.’

ESL UK COO Rob Black also thought the moment auspicious to comment: “This module marks an important step towards the professionalisation of the esports industry, providing a formal career path for much-needed talent. By linking the module with the University of York’s other excellent existing programmes, we can foster talent responsibly, equipping students with the skills they need to access amazing jobs in esports and beyond.”

With the acceptance of eSports in institutions of higher learning, professional video gaming may be perceived as a more meaningful way to spend one’s time. Some of the most noteworthy participants in a recently concluded Fortnite tournament organised by Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins at the Las Vegas Arena were students.

Another worthy initiative has been undertaken by Australian eSports organisation Legacy and the country’s Red Cross in a bid to fight loneliness among Australians.
