Cloud9 marked the last hope for the West as they moved into their Quarter-Finals match against Gen.G. Though many thought the two teams were evenly matched, Gen.G ran away with a clean sweep. The LCK fourth seed became the third Korean team to enter the Semi-Finals. Facing off against EDG next, Gen.G will hope to win their second World Championship under their new team banner.
Cloud9 catches a flight home
Cloud9 began the series on a high note, accruing an early gold lead and taking Dragon Soul Point. Fudge facilitated this promising start on Jarvan IV, however Gen.G’s botlane duo quickly took over the game. Game one marked the closest Cloud9 came to taking a game in the series, though they ultimately fell in a 41-minute battle of wills.
Game two was a landslide that was won through Gen.G’s topside. Rascal and Clid dominated individually and kept their opponents from having any game impact. In this sub-25 minute loss, Gen.G prevented Cloud9 from picking up any towers or neutral objectives.
With their back against the wall, Cloud9 claimed first blood in their final game of Worlds 2021, though this lead did not last long. Once again, Gen.G found success through Ruler and Life, who massively outperformed Zven and Vulcan. Gen.G’s dominant final victory locked in their spot for Semi-Finals, and punched Cloud9’s ticket back home.
Will Gen.G live up to their 2017 run?
Though under a different banner, Gen.G now look to win their second World title. As one of the most consistent teams in the world, Gen.G have qualified for Worlds countless times, though have only made Semis in their 2017 World Championship winning run.
Now, Gen.G will face off against EDG in the Semi-Finals. EDG had a far more contentious victory against their domestic rivals, RNG. Gen.G may use their incredible momentum to catapult themselves back into Finals.
