Worlds 2020 canceled? China puts all sports events on hold

China just canceled all international sports events. That might also have an impact on the League of Legends World Championships, which were set to be held in Shanghai.

Riot’s parent company Tencent until recently insisted that the LoL Worlds 2020 will be taking place in Shanghai, China. Those plans might be thrown overboard by the chinese government, which today canceled all international sports events in China for all of 2020.

In case those new regulations also impact esports, League of Legends World Championships will have to be postponed, esports reporter Rod “Slasher” Breslau stated on Twitter.

ESPN suggested, that Riot is thinking about a “single bubble” system to hold the event. For the durationen of event the 24 teams would be quarantined in the same hotel. The NBA and formula 1 use the same model for their restart of competition.

Currently there’s no official statement by Riot or Tencent on the current situation. Should the tournament actually be postponed, 2020 will be a major-free year for League of Legends. The Mid-Season Invitational has been canceled earlier this year because of corona virus.
