Who’ll reign supreme at the Six Invitational 2021?

The Six Invitational was supposed to be held down in February, yet with the ongoing pandemic and strict border closures in France, Ubisoft had no other option than postponing the event.

The biggest Ubisoft Esports event of the year is soon to start again however, after being postponed and moving continents. The players are hyped and ready to once more compete in an international setting with teams from across the world attending. Yet Wildcard Gaming is still unable to travel to the event due to the strict rules set by the Australian Government. They will still receive 1% of the prize pool, which would be the same as a last place finish.

Canadian back for number three

The Rainbow Six world was shaken up by a streak of retirements featuring all time greats like Niclas ‘Pengu’ Mouritzen and Troy ‘Canadian’ Jaroslawski. Canadian said his motivation and drive to compete were lessened with the pandemic and he felt like he needed physical events to reignite the fire. Despite being retired, he has actually rejoined SpaceStation Gaming, the team he played with before retirement, to take a chance for yet another Invitational victory of which he has already had two.

Canadian would be the first and only player to win a hattrick of Invitational titles and would only further cement his legendary status in the game. With Spacestation Gaming still being one of the top contenders of North America, there is a good chance the team could make it far into the bracket. Yet it also has to be noted that with Canadian’s retirement, there might be a lot of lost time practicing compared to their competitors.

The Brazilians are back in town

With different mutations of the virus existing in different parts of the world, it took some extra effort from Ubisoft to make sure the Brazilian teams were also allowed to attend. With them always bringing interesting strategies and a lot of potential to win, it seems only right the six teams will be attending. With Strict safety regulations including a 10-day quarantine period, the teams will have more than enough time to adjust and get comfortable in their hotel. The group stage will actually be played from the players’ hotel and with the 10-day quarantine, the teams will have more than enough time to bootcamp and be fully prepared to face whatever team.

APAC is on their way

All the way from the APAC region, there are two teams that are matched at the top with 900 Invitational points. Giants Gaming from Singapore and Cloud9 from South Korea are looking for glory, as they are both set in different groups. Giants Gaming might have the easiest shot, being in Group B, which merely drops a single team due to Wildcard Gaming not attending. Cloud9 will get a good check on where they stand in the worldwide scheme, with a ton of top teams in their bracket, yet they only have one North American team to face as most others are in Group B.

BDS is not unbeatable

The most dominant team of Europe seems to be struggling slightly nowadays. After being in control of most of the 2020 season, BDS Esport has actually come second in the European League 2021 Stage 1. Luckily, the only team attending that has beaten them in recent times, Virtus Pro, is on the other side of the spectrum in Group B. The recent matches might be just what teams need to read into weaknesses of BDS however. They could still be viewed as one of the top contenders, as the EUL only has best-of-one matches and a big event like the Six Invitational of course has best-of-three playoffs.

With the event almost lasting two weeks, it will be a battle for a lot of teams to see if they can adapt during such a stressful period, filled to the brink with matches. The group stage will be mayhem, with all the teams in a group playing each other. Afterwards, teams will be in a best-of-three double elimination bracket with a best-of-five final to end things on a high, of course with map advantage.
