What to expect from Horizon Forbidden West

Horzion Forbidden West is finally releasing on PlayStation 4 and 5. Here is what you can expect from the long-awaited sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn.

A new threat: The plot of Horizon Forbidden West

The second part of the story of Aloy, fearless machine hunter, kicks off roughly half a year after the conclusion of Horizon Zero Dawn. Once again she delves deeper into the past of the post-apocalyptic world. But this time around it is not her main motivation. A new threat has emerged: The “Red Blight”. The mysterious plague is accompanied by supercell storms and ravages the world.

Aloy departs on a mission to find the source of these phenomena in the title-giving “Forbidden West”, California, Utah and Nevada and comes across deserts, mountain ranges, tropical beaches as well as remnants from before the apocalypse.

These areas are not without inhabitants so conflict will be hard to avoid with hostile tribes. Especially tribal leader Regalla will be one of the many antagonists on her journey. But perhaps more deadlier still are the rogue machines we are all familiar with at this point.

More complex battle systems & more

Developers Guerrilla Games has taken most of the feedback from the community and implemented improvements compared to the predecessor:

  • More complex battle ystem for tactical fights and improved melee combat
  • Reworked and more detailled climbing mechanics
  • Bigger open world to explore with new under water areas
  • More fluid movements, reworked stealth and more mobility options like the glider
  • New machines with new behaviour resulting in more than 40 different machines Aloy has to face.
  • New weapons, new weapon system and a workbench to upgrade them.
  • Twelve “Valor Surges”: Stronger super attacks that need to be charged.
  • Different outfits for Aloy linked to her six skill trees.
  • Improved rewards from sidequets and more interactions with characters.
  • Ingame board game “Strike” to which you can challenge other characters.

Horizon Forbidden West is for now exclusive to the PlayStation. Considering the popularity of the franchise and that Horizon Zero Dawn also released (albeit later) for PC, a port is very likely to come eventually.
