Vitality misses the mark in first two LEC games – What’s going wrong

Entering the 2022 season, Team Vitality were the heavy favorites to win the LEC. The organization spent a significant amount during the recent offseason to craft Europe’s latest ‘super team.’ Bringing Perk and Alphari back from North America, the team also acquisitioned two-time LEC Champion Carzzy to the bottom lane. Retaining only two players from the previous year, Vitality’s overhaul was high regarded even before its first game.

Super teams have had a mixed history in the LEC. G2’s attempt to consolidate ‘the best’ players in Europe resulted in its worst year on record in 2021, as the team failed to win either split or make an international appearance. Though this is not Vitality’s fate, there certainly seems to be some faults in the theoretically solid lineup.

Both of Vitality’s solo laners have been the most glaring issues on the team thus far. Perkz had an incredibly lackluster debut on Vitality, finding only one kill and posting some of the worst laning stats in the LEC. Conversely, Alphari has continued his lane dominant ways however has had relatively little impact outside of his top lane island, finding the worst KP (51%) among top laners.

Vitality have attempted some ‘off-meta’ picks, most egregiously Perkz’s Akshan picks. Unfortunately for the team, the cohesion has not yet advanced well enough to support such experimental picks. Playing more standard compositions may allow the team to build initial confidence and find its first win. Though the ceiling of Vitality is still high, the team needs to make some changes to avoid its downward spiral.
