Channel of Donald Trump (indefinitely) suspended by Twitch

Following the events that took place at the Capitol, Twitch has decided to suspend the channel of president Donald Trump. As of now it seems like the suspension of the channel is indefinite. Chances are it’ll get lifted once things have calmed down, as Twitch will take another look at the account when Trump leaves office.

A spokesperson of Twitch gave a little more reasoning behind the decision in an email to Kotaku, where the news first appeared. “In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel. Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”

Following suit

Twitch isn’t the first platform that decided to suspend the account of Donald Trump following the events at the US Capitol. Facebook (and Instagram) announced they’ll be blocking the president, while Twitter decided to silence his account after it violated the Civic Integrity Policy. Twitch however did decide to possibly turn back their decision once Trump leaves office. “We are focused on minimizing harm leading up to the transition of government and will reassess his account after he leaves office.”

The impact of the decision by Twitch remains to be seen, as Trump and his campaign team aren’t very big on streaming, having only streamed about three times in total.
