Things to remember from the first week of LEC Spring Split 2021

The first week of LEC action is now over and we can already see some teams prove their worth, while others struggled to find their old form. Let’s talk about what happened in last week’s LEC weekend.
Dominance personified

We already knew that G2 Esports would perform in the Spring Split of 2021, but they’ve been extremely dominant in the first LEC weekend with a 3-0 record following wins over MAD Lions, SK Gaming and EXCEL. After adding bot laner Martin “Rekkles” Larsson to the roster, a lot of people were looking towards the G2 bot lane and how Rekkles would perform with Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle by his side.

Any doubt was erased after three superb performances by the G2 Esports bot lane, with Rekkles racking up the kills while Mikyx found the right engages at the right times. Even with a new member on the team, G2 Esports has kept their quirky personality intact, which once again showed its face in their compositions and drafts as Martin “Wunder“ Hansen showed he has a top lane Ivern in his champion pool. Big things are expected of this G2 roster if this keeps up.

Taking over

Another great performer this weekend was Rogue, who also finished off their matches with a 3-0 record. Adding top laner Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu gave Rogue some much needed stability in the top lane, but new support Adrian “Trymbi” Trybus seems to be the biggest revelation for Rogue so far. Trymbi enabled both Emil “Larssen” Larsson and Steven “Hans Sama” Liv, who racked up the kills and laid down heaps of pressure.

This Rogue roster might even pose a serious threat to G2. They showed great game knowledge, entering the game with a clear plan and drafting cleverly around their top players, most evident in their matches against Fnatic and SK Gaming. We’re mostly keeping an eye on Trymbi, who looks like a star in the making.

Rough start

Things didn’t go so well for Fnatic, who found themselves with only one win in three games. They lost brutally to a swinging Misfits Gaming roster, followed by a loss to Rogue. They were however able to pull something back against FC Schalke 04, finding their groove and playing a lot more clinically and composed. A big contrast to their first two games.

This current Fnatic roster is filled with individual talent, but seems to still have issues playing together or for each other. The Upset-Hylissang bot lane still looks a little rough around the edges, lacking the safety and clear follow-through Rekkles so often provided. While jungler Selfmade performed well in all their games, communication and working together with new mid laner Yasin “Nisqy” Dinçer seemingly also needs some work. Nisqy provides a different style of play than Nemesis did. Fnatic has a history of bad starts and getting better throughout the season, so fans shouldn’t despair yet.

A good fit

Misfits Gaming also came out strong, despite a single loss to Team Vitality. They defeated both Fnatic and MAD Lions and have looked good in both those games. Misfits Gaming seems to work best when jungler Iván “Razork” Díaz gets to play his familiar and well-known aggressive champions, which opens up the playing field and gives opportunity to his solo laners. Something mid laner Vincent “Vetheo” Berrié gladly takes advantage of.

Equal strength?

The first weekend of the LEC leaves seven teams on a 1-2 record, with every team at least securing one win. Among them Astralis, who didn’t receive a lot of faith from both their fans and general public ahead of the new season. Despite losses to MAD Lions and SK Gaming, they found themselves winning a game over Team Vitality, but it wasn’t at all clean. Especially Matti “WhiteKnight” Sormunen seems to struggle during his top lane matchups.

Both EXCEL and MAD Lions find themselves in a similar position, starting out the season with quite a lot of hype behind them and a lot of expectations but not delivering as of yet. It has to be said that both teams faced G2 Esports this weekend, with EXCEL also going up against Rogue.

Looking ahead

Next weekend teams play two matches each, with the most interesting being the one between Misfits Gaming and Rogue on Friday at 21:00, while Fnatic meet up with Vitality at 22:00 as both teams have something to prove. MAD Lions also face EXCEL at 18:00.
