The most important facts about LoL Worlds

The League of Legends World Championship will be starting soon and promises some exciting matchups and games. Here are some very interesting facts about Worlds you might not know.

Worlds 2020 will start in Shanghai, China, on September 25th. Here is an overview of everything you need to know about the schedule.

  • League of Legends’ community is bigger than you would imagine: Worlds 2019 was streamed in 16 different languages on more than 20 different platforms. On average, about 22 Million poeple watched the games with a peak of 44 Million. With nearly 4 Million active viewers, the semi-final match between G2 Esports and SKT 1 is the most viewed esports-match ever. This year’s numbers are expected to be even higher.
  • The team with most Worlds trophies is the Korean team SK Telecom T1. Beating over their opponents in 2013, 2015 and 2016 made them the record holder to this day. For all three wins Jungler Bae “Bengi” Seong-woong and famous Midlaner Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok lead the team to victory. The two players hold the record for most titles.

 

  • Team SoloMid and Fnatic share the title for the most participations at Worlds since the first season in 2011: Both teams played in Worlds eight times. Record winner T1 only participated five times.

  • Every year, Riot Games creates special champion skins für the world champion team. Every player can choose a champion they played during the tournament to receive a skin. The skins can then be bought in game for a limited time only and at every Worlds tournament.

 

  • For the first time since 2017 the number of participating teams is less than 24. Vietnamese teams GAM Esports and Team Flash are unable to attend the event due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Because of that, there will only be 22 teams this year.

  • In the second season the prize pool was $2 Million. At the time that was even bigger than Dota 2’s The International, which is breaking records every year nowadays. In 2019, the Worlds prize pool was $2.25 Million. The Vietnamese teams that cannot participate this year receive 2.1% of this year’s prize pool as a compensation.
