The 5 best skins in League of Legends

Sometimes it’s nice to change up your traditional League of Legends champions with a skin. Let’s take a look at 5 of the best ones available.

When starting on this article I quickly realized there are a lot, and I mean A LOT, of skins in League of legends. As of February the 21st 2021 there exist 1176 skins in League of legends. Going over all of them and picking the five best is, to say the least, almost impossible. The criteria I tried to put the most emphasis were: How good does the skin and/or the splash art look? How creative is the overall idea? Does it deliver on the premise? How iconic is the skin and finally, does it bring a smile to your face when you see it in-game?

DJ Sona – Sometimes the remix is better

Probably the best skin in-game. Being able to change to three different forms is cool. Letting each of those forms have a different but equally enjoyable soundtrack is even better. Making sure your teammates can listen in on those soundtracks is just a stroke of pure genius. This skin is on its own playing field. It is almost a guarantee when playing DJ Sona that your teammates will occasionally ask you to change up the tune in game meaning you feel like an actual DJ in game. The animations are top notch, so is the splash art, announcement trailer and music.

Dunkmaster Darius – Ballin’

Originally a community idea, Dunkmaster Darius brought to life the meme. People used to say, “I got dunked by Darius”. It’s a complete reimagining of the champion and the overall idea is brilliant, creative, and funny. Riot did an amazing and detailed job with this skin since all the details just add up brilliantly.

All of the voice lines were rerecorded to make him fit in more within the basketball theme, including taunts against champions and dialogue when you buy items. When his passive is fully stacked you can hear the iconic court buzzer, they added in a fully working dribbling animation (I can only imagine how much work that took). When using your ult most people know that Darius does a genuine dunk, but what few realize is that he has different dunks depending on the level of your ult and the kill streak you’ve got.

Elementalist lux – A dress for every occasion

With Sona we talked about having multiple variations within the skin. Elementalist come in 10 different varieties. The player itself can pick the variation based on the elements. Changing this multiple times in-game and letting the player decide what their preferred skin is gives you the flexibility no other skin has ever introduced in game. Completing the picture with different particle effects and animations for each of the forms means you are essentially buying ten different skins in one.

Super Galaxy Rumble – Superheroes come in all sizes

This skin is what Rumble should represent in his vanilla skin. He is a tiny yordle with a ferocious and dauntless personality. Having a personal theme song does help sell the image of Rumble being a kickass superhero with an uplifting swagger around him. The mecha suit looks awesome and once again the voice actor did an amazing job capturing the character and the announcement trailer made me think Riot games was going to do a miniseries just about his adventures.

The only downside to the skin is that when using the flamespitter (Rumble’s Q ability) the flames are done in a more cartoon-esque art style. These do fit the thematic better but feel out of place on the rift. Yeah, we’re really nitpicking here.

Astronaut Bard – To infinity, and beyond

Bard is portrayed as a wandering caretaker continuously looking for the next big journey to find more wandering spirits known as Meeps. With astronaut Bard he can push that final frontier and look to the stars. Meeps are portrayed as cute aliens and I wonder if League of Legends would have had a more sci-fi aesthetic instead of a fantasy one, if this would have been the vanilla skin of Bard. The bouncing animations and the UFO’s instead of shrines will give you the ultimate lift-off experience when roaming the rift.
