Team Liquid and Gambit advance to playoffs – More COVID cases at VCT Champions

VCT Champions has trudged along despite issues relating to COVID testing, rule infractions, and player unrest. Though three more teams were set to qualify for playoffs today, only two actually did. Though Champions is struggling, there were still some intensely competitive games.

Here’s whats happening with the Champions – both in game and out of game.

Gambit and Team Liquid qualify for playoffs

It was certainly a good day for EMEA, as all three playoff competitors have come from the region. Team Liquid and Gambit became the latest. Gambit had an unexpected challenge in Team Vikings, as the team was nearly driven to a loss on the third and final map, Icebox. The efforts of Sacy and the Brazilian squad pushed Gambit to 9-3 deficit at the half.

Gambit made one final push on defeneder side, resulting in a nine round winning streak that extended the third map into OT for an eventual Gambit win.

Team Liquid have largely been considered one of the strongest teams entering Champions. Facing a much anticipated matchup in Sentinels, Liquid proved that they deserve a spot at the top. The EMEA Champions won in a similarly contested 2-1 manner, but ultimately becoming the third team to qualify.

COVID scares and disqualifications – What’s happening in Berlin?

The match between Envy and Acend was originally meant to be played between Vivo Keyd and Envy. The Brazilian team was given a post-match loss after it was found that one of the players used a known Cypher camera exploit. Despite winning the series, Acend was pushed into the Winners finals for the group.

The match has been given no official date however as multiple tests reported that a larger number of players had contracted COVID. Though rapid tests were given to multiple players, Riot Games now claims that many of these were false positives. While the situation has yet to be resolved, Champions is chugging along.
