Skill-based matchmaking has ‘always been a thing in Call of Duty’, according to a developer

There has always been talks about skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty. Until now it was all speculation if the mechanic actually existed in the game, but multiplayer developer Josh Menke recently confirmed the feature has always existed in the franchise.

Playing an online game against random opponents can be very frustrating. That’s why a lot of games rely on so called skill-based matchmaking, which should put you up against players of somewhat the same skill level, even if you don’t play a ranked game mode. Skill-based matchmaking should make playing an online game much more enjoyable, since you always stand a chance versus your enemies.

A thing in many games

In an interview published on gdconf.com, Call of Duty developer Josh Menke revealed that skill-based matchmaking has been a thing in their games for years. “Modern Warfare 2007 did have some skill-based matchmaking,” he confirms. “All of them always have, it’s just the math and science has gotten better over the years and caught up. If you grew up on it back then, your expectations are very different than if you have it now.”

Menke also thinks players need to understand skill-based matchmaking is a thing in many games, even if they think it’s not. “You’ll have players who play Call of Duty, that will be like, I don’t like skill-based matchmaking, but then they go play Valorant and it’s fine.”
