Shopify enter StarCraft II as Shopify Rebellion

E-commerce company Shopify takes yet another step into esports, as they start their own organization under the name of Shopify Rebellion.

The news was announced by the CEO of the company, Tobi Lutke, who shared a tweet made by the Shopify Rebellion twitter which also features an introductory video announcing their very own StarCraft II team. The organization already added some top names within the game to their roster in the form of Byun Hyun-woo, Julian “Lambo” Brosig and Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn. The latter is also the first woman to have ever won an international Major Starcraft II event.

The fact that Shopify takes to esports and starts up a StarCraft II team isn’t all that big of a surprise. CEO Tobi Lutke is a well-known fan of the franchise and often streams the game himself on his Twitch channel. As StarCraft II once again gained traction following an ESL and DreamHack deal for the competitive scene featuring some sizable prize pools, interest for the game has risen once again.

The esports program manager at Shopify, Dario “TLO” Wünsch talked about entering the StarCraft II scene with their own team on their website. “Being given the opportunity to lead a professional team is a dream come true. It’s a role that comes with a lot of responsibility and unknown territory to explore for us as a business, and myself as a person. I suspect many mistakes will be made along the way, and I can’t wait to learn from each and every one of them.”
