Rumor: Team BDS purchases Schalke 04’s LEC spot for €30m

Reportedly, the wait to see who will replace Schalke 04 has come to an end.

Schalke 04 officially announced their exit from the LEC prior to the start of the 2021 Summer Split. Rumors about Schalke’s exit swirled ever since their longstanding football club by the same name was relegated for the first time in 33 years. Financially damaged by both this and the COVID-19 pandemic, Schalke 04’s esports department seemed bound to close their doors.

Team BDS has been an early contender to take the vacant LEC spot. Prevalent in the Rocket League and Rainbow 6 Siege, BDS made their introduction to league in 2020 by joining the French National League, the LFL. Ending 4th in the LFL playoffs, Team BDS will supposedly be making the jump to the European main stage.

Reports alleging BDS’s purchase of Schalke 04’s spot broke earlier on June 16th. Though multiple sources have since re-stated details of the rumored deal, there has been no official confirmation by any involved parties. Also, the fate of Schalke 04’s standing roster is up in the air.

Prior to the season, Schalke 04 made some radical moves as Felix “Abbedagge” Braum moved to North America. Alongside this, Schalke 04 moved up Thomas “Kirei” Yuen to the starting jungler position instead of Erbeck “Gilius” Demir. Whether or not this roster will be purchased along with the spot, or if Team BDS will opt for an entirely new roster, will be seen if this deal comes to fruition.  Regardless, Schalke’s relatively short, but meaningful time in the LEC is rapidly approaching it’s end.
