Rocket League will become free to play. Psyonix and its parent company Epic Games follow in the footsteps of other successful esport titles and ease access to the game. Original buyers will be compensated with several goodies.
The majority of the top esport titles have removed paywalls for new players. After Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s transition prior, Rocket League will now follow suit this summer. With COVID19 and controversy regarding the handling of its esports league this might prove valuable respite for the Rocket League scene.
For the upcoming transition to the free-to-play model several changes will be coming to Rocket League. The in-game shop will be reworked to be more similar to the Fortnite and VALORANT ones, furthermore Rocket League will introduce Creator Codes to enable additional support for Streamers and YouTubers according to a report by Esports Talk.

Compensation for original players
The loyal player base that has been with the game for longer and initially paid 20€ will be rewarded with a special “Legacy” status.
It is available to all players, who played at least one match prior to the upcoming free-to-play update.
The Legacy status includes the following perks:
- All Rocket-League-branded DLC released prior to the update./li>
- A special title showcasing the year you started playing Rocket League
- All common items will be moved to Legacy quality. If you don’t own all commons, you will unlock them for free./li>
- Golden Cosmos Boost
- Faded Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro wheels
- Huntress player banner
The free-to-play update will also move the game from Steam to the Epic Games store. Existing Steam players will be unaffected but future players will have to download the game through Epic Games Launcher. Once the update goes live you will also be able to play on your account across different platforms as long as you link them to your Epic Games account.
