Riot Games to tackle toxicity with revamped Honor system rewards

Toxicity and online games. They seem to go hand in hand, and League of Legends is no exception to that.

The game has been struggling with toxicity throughout all game modes, despite Riot’s efforts to combat this intrusiveness.

To battle this problem the developer is building on the Honor 2.0 project to incentivize players to act nice.

The new product lead for behavioral systems TimTamMonster has given some insights into the big changes coming to the Honor system, as well as the trends that their internal punishment systems have caught on.

Many, if not all these changes are expected to roll out this year.

One interesting detail is that there is only a very minor percentage of so-called “consistently disruptive” among players. They make up only five percent of the League of Legends player base.

The other 95 percent receive a total of 86 percent of the reports. This means that the greater part of the reports is on and from people who aren’t consistently disruptive.

“Champ Select reports only make up about 3.2-percent of reports today,” TimTamMonster said. “But we know that your experience in every part of the game still matters.”

The new system will give more rewards to players who are honorable throughout the season. Players who reach Honor 5 are receiving a special recall animation. Riot even hinted at an exclusive skin for players who reach that Honor 5 before the end of a season.
