Riot Games switches semi-final match dates for MSI 2021

Riot’s decision to switch semi-final dates for MSI 2021 has been the target of ire for many.

Riot Games have changed around the MSI 2021 semi-finals schedule just days before the matches will take place. Both semi-finalist matches have been switched around meaning that RNG will play PSG Talon on Friday while Damwon Kia will now meet MAD Lions on Saturday.

This decision was made in light of issues regarding COVID-19 travel protocols. While players went through a quarantine period and tested negative prior, anyone traveling to China requires an antibody blood test 48 hours before flight. Given the potnetial that RNG could make a premature return to China.

Previously scheduled to take their blood test on the same day as their semi-final series, Riot allegedly looked into other options before making their ultimate decision to switch the dates. This choice has been the target of outrage for countless critics, specifically faithful LCK fans.

This decision largely comes at the expense of Damwon Kia, since the extra day of practice they otherwise would have had should they win their series is now gone. RNG on the other hand gets the benefit of a first seed team. If the LPL representatives best PSG Talon, they will now have an extra day to prepare for their finalists matchup.

Damwon Kia’s coach Kim “kkOma” Jeong-gyun has voiced his dismay over the issue. In a press conference, KkOma stated “I asked them to make sure this will not be repeated in the future.” Though obviously in a disadvantageous situation, it seems Damwon Kia will not protest and move forward with the hand they were dealt.
