Psyonix revamps Rocket League’s esports circuit

Psyonix has been under fire for a while now for their handling of Rocket League’s esports scene. Now they have announced a complete restructuring of the current tournament circuit.

Esportobserver reports that Psyonix has massive plans for the tournament scene. This restructuring is owed at least partially to an open letter many esports teams sent to the developer criticizing lack of security and financial incentive for successful Rocket League teams.

According to the report Rocket League will move to an “open” system with three splits per year and three regional events each split. Concluding each split will be an interregional Major matching European and North American teams against each other. To finish off the year Psyonix plans a world championship after the three splits end.

The regional events serve as qualifier for the Majors and those serve as qualifiers via a point system for the world championship.

For the current top league RLCS Psyonix will seed the current teams into the first six regional split events. Currently qualified RLCS teams and Rival Series teams will also be allowed to play a weekly league at the beginning of the first split.

Further details regarding the future of the RLCS are not yet known but Psyonix seems to be in close contact with teams in the scene regarding the restructuring. The main critique of the scene had been directed towards the long off season and too short qualifying processes for events outside of the RLCS. Cloud 9 recently already decided to cut their losses and dissolved their Rocket League team.
