Opinion: Why Apex Legends is the best competitive Battle Royale game

Let me begin by saying that I think all battle royales are beautiful and that his opinion is not meant to bash on other games. I just happen to think MY battle royale is the prettiest. That’s right, Apex Legends is the best competitive BR you can play, and I don’t think it’s even close.

The abilities

The abilities that the characters in Apex Legends offer makes this reason one of the top reasons why the game is the best around. Every legend has a purpose and brings something unique to the table. There’s a character for every playstyle, whether you’re comfortable w-keying for frags, or want to play the positional advantage angle.

This plays into the team compositions you can craft. Find the perfect balance of abilities, and you’ll be able to consistently win your fights, or wombo-combo your team to success!

The gunplay

Although the impact of the abilities has grown over the last few seasons, at its core Apex Legends is still a first-person shooter where a good aim is paramount in winning games.

The gunplay is smooth, and with all the different weapons you can choose from, there is no way that you won’t find two/three guns you prefer to play with. There’s nothing more satisfying than one-clipping your opponent and dealing 200+ damage. My preferred guns are the R-301 for that exact reason and the wingman. There’s no greater feeling than hitting six Wingman shots in a row and finishing off the kill with a headshot.

The pace

As opposed to other BRs, the pace of the action in Apex Legends is just perfect. The initial looting -when you’re not contested- lasts just long enough to get properly kitted for your first fight. The maps are large enough to accommodate 60 players scavenging for weapons early on, but not too big to get lost between two points of interest.

There are six rounds in the game, with only the first circle taking quite a lot of time to close. Rounds two through six close quickly, minimizing downtime between the action.

The movement

Movement in Apex Legends favors the players who understand the mechanics. Apex Legends has borrowed its movement mechanics from the Titanfall series, which was renowned for its superior and silky smooth movement.

You can run, slide, change direction mid-air. The developers are taking out some of the movement mechanics, claiming it’s “unintended” and the player base is livid because it takes away from the skill needed to perform the most difficult jumps and wall jumps.

Squad size

The official ranked mode is played in teams of three. For me personally, it’s a living hell trying to solo queue in a game where you’re playing 5v5, but in Apex the maximum number of random players I can encounter is two, and that gives me -strangely enough- peace of mind.

It also means when I really want to play with only people I know, there are only two I need to convince to play rather than four. As I grow older, less and less of my friends have the time to play, and finding two teammates is, for the time being, not a problem.
