NRG partner with CMG.Asia to acquire GAM eSports

NRG is making a re-entry into LoL esports, expanding it their first international team.

NRG will be making it’s return to League of Legends esports, but this time in the VCS. In a recent announcement tweet, NRG stated they will start their global expansion by expanding into the Vietnamese league. NRG Asia, their new initiative, will partner with CMG.ASIA to pick up GAM eSports.

GAM eSports, formerly the Gigabyte Marines, are far and away the most historically dominant team in the VCS. With four titles in the VCS, GAM eSports have represented their region at Worlds twice. Notably losing out their opportunity to attend Worlds 2020 and MSI 2021, GAM eSports have maintained a vice-like hold over their region.

The last time NRG made an appearance in LoL esports was in the LCS under their NRG flagship name. Active only in 2016, NRG did not qualify for the 2017 LCS season as they lost out to Echo Fox. Since then, NRG has taken a 5-year hiatus from the LoL esports scene. Sources have stated that NRG ultimately decided on the VCS after a failure to find spots in the LCS and LCK.

NRG’s CEO, Andy Miller, cited the passion around esports in the Southeast Asia region as reason for their decision. Bringing in far greater resources and infrastructure into the league, it seems that this partnership will solidifyGAM eSport’s dominance in the Vietnamese scene.
