New MOBA Pokémon Unite announced

During the most recent Pokémon Presents the Pokémon Company has revealed the newest game of the legendary franchise. Pokémon Unite will be a 5 vs 5 multiplayer game in the MOBA genre similar to League of Legends or Dota 2.

Pokémon fans around the world had been eagerly awaiting the presentation on June 24. In the livestream the developer unveiled a cooperation with Tencent (parent company of Riot) titled Pokèmon Unite.

MOBA with Pokémon

Pokémon Unite will be a free-to-start game developed by Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studios, who had also developed popular mobile titles Honor of Kings, Arena of Valor and Call of Duty Mobile. It will release on Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch with cross-play enabled between the platforms.

Pokémon Unite will feature classic 5-man teams on a rather standard map with three lanes familiar to MOBA players. Players will be able to choose between different Pokémon to start and level up, unlocking new abilities or even evolving along the way. The traditional type advantage between different Pokémon will not make a return for Pokémon Unite.

Goal of the game will be to acquire more points than the opposing team within the alloted time. To do so players can catch wild Pokémon and also defeat their opponents’ Pokémon. Besides the few gameplay scenes in the trailer the developers have kept a close lid on further details.

Mixed reactions by the fans

Regardless of that a sizeable number of Pokémon fans have expressed their disappointment with the announcement on Twitter and other places.

Many fans seem to have had hopes for a new mainline title, a continuation of the Let’s Go-series or remakes of previous generations. However reactions are not entirely negative as others have also expressed anticipation for the new and unorthodox release.

No concrete release date has been announced yet, but Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara has said that additional information will follow shortly.
