Netflix aims to enter gaming market – looks towards mobile gaming first

In a shareholders letter Netflix seemingly confirms they’ll be entering the gaming market and they have their eyes on mobile gaming first.

In the letter, Netflix goes on to talk broadly about their plans to enter the gaming market as part of their innovation, as they want to understand and reach their members who are interested in gaming content at no extra cost. “Games will be included in members’ Netflix subscription at no additional cost similar to films and series. Initially, we’ll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices.”

Netflix goes on to say that while they are willing to go into the gaming market but still value their movies and series. “We’re excited as ever about our movies and TV series offering and we expect a long runway of increasing investment and growth across all of our existing content categories, but since we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.“

The fact that Netflix wants to pursue mobile gaming first isn’t a complete shock, as their mobile efforts have proven successful in the past. “In the five markets where we had previously launched a mobile-only plan, we have found that the mobile only plan has been an effective way to introduce more consumers to Netflix while being roughly revenue neutral as the lower average revenue per membership is offset by incremental acquisition and generally better retention.”

We’ve seen Netflix already try to tap into the gaming market by securing adaptations of popular video game franchises to stream on their platform. Dota: Dragon’s Blood turned out to be a success, while a new League of Legends animated series is also still on the way.
