More than 62 million units sold – Nintendo Switch surpasses NES

The Nintendo Switch is breaking records left and right. Making it past 62 million units sold, the current console has now surpassed the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

The sales numbers for the Switch continue climbing. With titles like Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and Animal Crossing New Horizons driving sales, the console is going strong. At the end of June the Switch sold 61.44 million units, just missing out on 62 million as Nintendo announced in their end of quarter report.

According to the weekly Japanese sales numbers from Famitsu the Switch has now surpassed 62 million units sold and also overtaken the NES.

This marks out the Switch as the second best Nintendo console of all time. Only the Wii is still ahead with 101,63 million units. But if the Switch continues at its current pace, the newer console should overtake the Wii soon enough.

Sold units of all Nintendo consoles and handhelds:

  1. Nintendo DS – 154.02 million
  2. Game Boy/Game Boy Color – 118.69 million
  3. Wii – 101.63 million
  4. Game Boy Advance – 81.51 million
  5. Nintendo 3DS – 75.87 million
  6. Nintendo Switch – more than 62.03 million
  7. Nintendo (NES) – 61.91 million
  8. Super Nintendo (SNES) – 49.1 million
  9. Nintendo 64 – 32.93 million
  10. GameCube – 21.74 million
  11. Wii U – 13.56 million

The recent numbers since the quarterly report do not include the Japanese Nintendo shop or numbers from outside Japan. Once the next quarterly report arrives we will have a full picture of the success.

While the numbers of the Switch are going strong, it might not surpass the lone bestseller at the top. With more than 150 million units sold the Nintendo DS might be a milestone too far for the Switch. Then again upcoming titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 could also lead to another surge in sales.

One thing is however certain. The Nintendo Switch has more than compensated for the disappointment of the Wii U generation.
