LoL: Riot to remove Inter-Divisional Promotion Matches?

Hitting the promo wall in ranked? You might just be in luck as Riot is contemplating removing the disliked promotion matches. In a developer blog post Riot’s Competitive Gameplay Product Manager Cody “Codebear” Germain has shared some thoughts for the future of ranked matchmaking in League of Legends.

Riot has already implemented autofill and duo parity but more changes are to come for the upcoming season 11 of ranked matchmaking.

Improving progression satisfaction

Most prominent among a plethora of improvements scheduled for season 11 is the removal of ranked promotion matches. In order to improve progression satisfaction and skill expression in the system Codebear is aiming to remove inter-divison promotions.

This is done especially to “reduce frustration of seemingly hitting a wall when you know you’ve been playing well”. With the possbile removal of promotion matches Riot will also take a look at demotion protection, as dropping down in ranks will be adjusted accordingly

Since their implementation in season 3 many players have been lobbying for the removal of the promotion matches as they could easily derail their progress. The removal is not yet set in stone, but looking exceedingly likely to happen.

Riot has also announced a rework of the rewards for ranked matchmaking while continuosly improving the quality of matchmaking. You can read the full blog post here:
