League of Legends Worlds 2020 confirmed by Riot Games

Riot Games has confirmed that League of Legends Worlds 2020 will still be taking place after concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. After confirming the news, they also shared a bit more information in regards to the schedule they’ll be adhering to as well as the location and format of the tournament.

Professional and casual players alike were worried we wouldn’t get the World Championship this year after the Mid-Season Invitational got cancelled amidst the COVID-19 situation. Riot Games announced that Worlds will still go on in China, but the competition itself will no longer take place in multiple cities. All matches will be played in Shanghai, including the finals.

Riot Games explained their stance in a blog post they released. “Hosting the event in a single city will reduce travel throughout the tournament and give us the ability to more closely control the show environment. We continue to use the guidance from various health organizations and local and national authorities to prioritize safety for our players, fans, and everyone involved with bringing Worlds 2020 to life.”

This edition of Worlds will start on September 25, with the finals scheduled to take place on October 31. Riot also disclosed details on the Worlds tournaments of the upcoming years, once again being played in China in 2021, with the United States up next in 2020. To go along with the Worlds 2020 news, Riot Games already released a teaser for the tournament.
