League of Legends All-star event cancelled by Riot Games

In a statement made earlier today by Riot Games’ Global Esports Division, the company has decided to cancel the 2022 All-Stars event. The statement claimed that this decision was reached due to travel restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

For the past two years, Riot Games has had to navigate global travel restrictions when planning live events. This has resulted in multiple cancellations, including 2020 MSI and left some regions, specifically the VCS, out of international competition. Worlds 2021 was planned all year to take place in China, however had to be relocated to Iceland last minute.

Riot Games cited quarantine requirements as the primary reason they decided to cancel the event. The quarantine required for players would ultimately last longer than the actual event. In the interest of time, Riot Games decided to do away with the event. Last year, All-Stars 2020 was held online with few players coming from other regions to attend.

“While we are pleased with the success of MSI and Worlds, after careful deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to forgo this year’s All-Star Event given COVID-19 travel constraints,” Riot Games wrote in its statement, “This decision was not made lightly, as we know many fans and players around the world look forward to closing out the LoL Esports season at ASE.”

Instead of attempting to get players to North America and forcing players to quarantine, Riot Games is focusing on events for 2022 already. The LEC has already announced its plans for the competitive season as well as the ERLs.
