League of Legends 101: Rune pages

What are runes?

You had to buy runes and you could only buy the best runes if you were level 30, just like multiple rune pages. Small reminder that levels were capped until patch 7.22 meaning you could not advance beyond level 30. Now you are probably wondering how runes could personalize your playstyle? That is what you are here for, let us find out!

Rune page rundown

A rune page can go many different directions but has five “main” paths. You can choose between Precision (improves your attacks and has sustained damage), Domination (has burst damage and target access), Sorcery (empowers your abilities and has resource manipulation), Resolve (gives durability and crowd control) and Inspiration (more creative tools and rule bending). For every rune page you can go down two paths. A primary one and a secondary one.

The primary path decides the most as this will give you the option of a Keystone for your rune page. This is the rune with the most impact in game and therefore should be chosen wisely. With the Keystone, you also gain three lesser rune choices in your primary path. The secondary path only gives you two lesser runes. If you have decided on which ones to take, you can finish your rune page off with some “flex runes” also called “Shard slots”. Here you will have the option for some extra damage, resistances, or utility.

Fun fact: every rune path “icon” is based on Runeterran factions. Precision is the Golden cityscape of Demacia, Domination is Noxian fortification, Sorcery is from the Mountains of Icathia, Resolve is from the Riverlands of Southern Freljord and Inspiration is from beneath the heavens atop Mount Targon.

One big misunderstanding about rune pages

Unfortunately, there is a big misunderstanding in League Of Legends when it comes to the rune system. There is this “myth” going around that every champion has one set of rune page that is “the best” for that specific champion. However, that is far from the truth. What is true is that every champion can have a specific rune page that has the highest win rate percentage but that does not mean that that is the best rune page for that champion. What it does mean, is that it is the easiest and probably most general way of playing that champion. Taking a rune page with Comet for a mage or Aftershock on an engaging champion.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that every champion should go a specific rune page. They were designed for you to personalize to your own playstyle so that is exactly what you should do. If you like to hunt down people even though you are not an assassin but a tank, try out the Predator keystone and see if you can catch the enemy off guard with a sneaky roam or invade. World Champion Doinb even once said that there are no perfect runes and everything depends on your playstyle.

Go out there and delete your pre-existing rune pages and build a page of your own to dominate with your own personal playstyle. Experiment, fail, try new stuff out and eventually settle for your own best personal rune page per champion!
