League of Legends 101 – An intro to Turrets

At the beginning, middle and ending of every lane, there is a turret to defend you from enemies. These turrets also give you vision and are protected for the first minutes of the game. However, there might be some things you don’t know about turrets and why they are a vital part of the map for your victory or downfall.

For your protection

First off, turrets are there for your protection. It helps you farm the minions if you can not walk up in the lane to contest them or if you are afraid of a gank because you have no idea where the opponents’ jungler is. Turrets pierce through armor and even gain extra resistances at the first fourteen minutes of the game in the form of turret plates. They are very helpful to defend you, but you should always be aware that the enemy does not freely chip down on your turret. Every plate gives the enemy gold and you do not want to give them that for free.

Fun fact: only base turrets can regenerate health. Inhibitor turrets regenerate 3 health per second and nexus turrets 6 health per second.

If you are playing under your turret because you are playing on a weak side of the map with no attention from your team, maybe even in a bad match up, make the most out of it. Usually, the enemy jungler has an eye out for you in this particular situation and he might opt to dive you under your turret. It is your job to try and survive, trade as evenly as possible or outplay them.

In that case, it is good to know that turret shots do more damage the longer it attacks a target. This ramps up for every shot the turret takes and it will only reset if the turret is not actively shooting enemy champions for three seconds. If possible, let them attack you as soon as possible and try to survive as long as needed to get the best trade out of it.

But why are there turrets? Can we not just have inhibitors in the lane?

Although it would be funny to see, it would not defend the entrances of your jungle. That is one of the more important underlying reasons a turret exists. They do not only protect you, but they also protect a part of the map, your part. If you let your turret be destroyed, that means you lose control of a part of the map.

So by definition, the most important first turret is the one in the midlane. If you lose that one, you lose a lot of vision to your jungle’s entrance. This gives the enemy a lot of freedom to set up traps and get control with wards. It is your job to play it a bit safer than and provide enough vision control wherever a turret has been destroyed. The lesson of today is to hold on to your turrets as long as you can and always use them to your advantage!
