LCK and LPL to have 4 Worlds slots

An incentive by Riot Games to encourage competition at MSI has given the LPL a 4th slot for Worlds along with the LCK.

North American and European fans may be disheartened to hear that both the LCK and LPL will get an extra spot at Worlds. In order to encourage competition at MSI, an event previously criticized for being inconsequential, Riot Games offered an additional Worlds slot along with a their prize pool. In light of RNG’s recent MSI win, the LPL will now have a 4th team at Worlds.

Alongside this, the LCK has also been granted an additional Worlds slot because of their ‘historical performance.’ Considering the long reigning LCK dynasty which saw the likes of SKT at it’s prime, the LCK is undoubtedly the most decorated region. This extra slot was awarded based off Riot’s global power ranking’s system. Damwon’s second place finish at MSI pushed them over the points threshold.

Worlds will take place later this year in Shenzhen, China. The summer split coming just before will ultimately decide the qualified teams for this event. Given the sheer depth of talent in both the LCK and LPL, it is very possible that even a fourth seed could contend for the World title.

Certainly this comes at the expense of the LCS and LEC, who will only have 3 teams attending per usual. Now that every group in Worlds will have at least one LCK and LPL team, making it out of Groups will become a tall order for most teams.
