Korean League of Legends team Griffin disbands

Griffin, the Korean League of Legends team, will be disbanding. Team Griffin announced the decision today and published a statement on it, listing their achievements and thanking the fans.

Despite them disbanding today, Griffin was able to garner quite a few achievements in the three years they were active. They won the KeSPa Cup in 2018 after beating Gen.G with a 3-0 score and had a stint at Worlds in 2019, ending their run in the quarter finals after losing to Invictus Gaming. At the end of the 2020 season Griffin fell back to the Challenger League and they were not a part of the new franchised LCK.

To the fans

In their statement, Griffin reminisced and announced that they are disbanding. “We were heartfully happy to be able to share the excitement of victory and regrets of the defeats with out fans and with the flutter of the fans waiting for our matches, Griffin grew more and more. […] With the dream-like time behind us, the journey of Griffin LoL team has come to an end.”

Griffin wasn’t an unspoken team and had its ups and downs when it comes to competition, often going on long winning and losing streaks. In 2019 they were also fined by Riot after a scandal broke surrounding the illegitimate contract of jungler Seo “Kanavi” Jin-Hyeok with JD Gaming. Griffin not getting a spot in the new franchised LCK might very well have been the final nail in the coffin for the team.
