Karrigan: “I don’t think streamsniping is a big issue”

Over the last weeks, streamsniping became a big talking point in the CS:GO community. We had the opportunity to speak about it with mousesports-IGL karrigan.

In the sixth episode of our CS:GO-talk GooseEck we had the chance to talk to Finn “karrigan” Andersen, Unicorns of Love coach Alexander “kakafu” Szymanczyk and BIG manager Christian Lenz about streamsniping.

The issue arose in the last weeks of online play, when pro teams had streams of their own matches running while playing. That sparked a lot of controversy over teams like MIBR and fans called for justice.

Do Online matches allow for information leaks all the time?

According the karrigan, the issue is not as big as it is made out to be: “I don’t think streamsniping is a big issue, since you can not gain any real time information.” The 4-minute delay in most professional streams seems to be enough to not reveal any significant information about the current game state.

“Since I’ve started playing online, there was always a team with sudden Teamspeak issues at 13:13”, karrigan added. It might just be impossible to supervise every team all the time. Issues like streamsniping have been a part of online-CS forever.

The information revealed from a delayed stream seems of little relevance. Hard punishments from organizations like ESIC are most likely just put up as a deterrence for the teams. Maybe starting there is a way to stop bigger scandals from happening in the future.
