Is the Call of Duty League expanding soon?

According to a report by Adam Stern (Sports Business Journal) The Call of Duty League is exploring a possible expansion of the competition. Right now the interest is mostly coming from North American markets but Europe could possibly get involved as well. The North American candidates would be Las Vegas, Charlotte and D.C.

The CDL earlier talked about expanding but didn’t do so for their upcoming 2021 season. One of the biggest hurdles for potential new investors would be the price for a franchise spot, which was previously set at $25 million and is certainly quite a big risk to take for a relatively new league. It’s possible that number might change if new investors want to buy into the competition, but there’s currently no information on that yet.

CDL commissioner Johanna Faries didn’t confirm the interest in possible CDL slots yet. “The pandemic presented a lot of blessings and a lot of curses in the same way most leagues were in other sports and esports. It has strengthened us in certain ways, we’ve now had the ability to take a breather, assess what went well and didn’t go so well and is in need of improvement and apply some of that to the 2021 experience, so I think fans are going to see a lot more from us even in an online environment.”
