Is Netflix starting development on a live-action Pokémon series?

According to multiple sources, Netflix has started early development on a live-action Pokémon series for their platform.

Not a lot of details in regards to the project are known, but multiple sources have come out and seemingly confirmed the news, which means we could expect a live-action Pokémon series on Netflix somewhere in the future. Joe Henderson, known from Netflix’s Lucifer, is reportedly attached to the project as he’ll be the showrunner and executive producer for the series. Both Netflix and Henderson haven’t responded to the news yet.

Right now Netflix is already the host to multiple seasons of Pokémon, including the Indigo League and some of the movies. Netflix has shifted to different kinds of content over the years and has been taking multiple steps in the direction of anime and live-action adaptations, with Pokémon possibly being one of the latter. The Pokémon franchise has gone live-action in the past, with the Detective Pikachu movie.

Pokémon remains one of the most popular gaming (and entertainment in general) franchises in the world ever since its inception in 1995, taking over the market by storm. Over the years multiple main-line games have been released and the franchise features a long-standing anime, an extremely popular card game and more. There’s no doubt that if Netflix is attempting to make a live-action Pokémon series, there’ll be more than enough fans out there to enjoy it, as the popularity of the franchise is unmatched. With Pokémon UNITE just releasing on Switch, the hype seems to be back in full force.
